Course Summary

You will develop skills required within the health and social care sector for a number of areas including child, youth, adult and health care. The course will also help you to identify your own aptitudes and understandings about the working practices of a number of areas within health and social care.

The course can be taken as either 1 or 2 blocks of study so can be combined with other A-level or GCSE courses.

The number of units completed depends on the size of the qualification.

Course Details

You will study the relevant theory and then complete project work or written examinations in several areas. These modules are core to all of the qualifications mentioned. The brackets represent the qualification they are associated with and are requirements for the larger qualifications:

- Human Lifespan Development (Certificate)

- Meeting Individual care and support needs (Cert.)

- All of the above plus: Working in Health & Social Care (Extended Cert.)

- All of the above plus: Enquiries into Current Research in Health & Social Care (Diploma)

- Promoting Public Health (Dip.)

The optional units will be decided closer to the start date of the course, depending on expertise available; these are most likely to be 2 from: psychological perspectives, sociological perspectives or nutritional health.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

- Assessment is examination, set tasks (external assessments) and coursework assessment based (internal assessments).

- For the certificate: 50% external assessment, 50% internal coursework (2 mandatory units)

- For the ext certificate: 58% external assessment, 42% internal (3 mandatory and 1 optional)

- For the Diploma: 46% external, 54 % internal (6 mandatory, 2 optional)

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in English. Grade 4 in Maths (or working towards the qualification at college).

For the Certificate and Extended Certificate (= Single and Double) - a Grade 4 is required in all of English Language, Maths and a science.

This qualification is generally taken alongside other qualifications as part of a 2-year programme of learning. This will enable learners to progress to a degree programme chosen from a range of programmes in the health and social care sector. The qualification is intended to carry UCAS points and is recognised by higher education institutions as contributing to meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses.
