Course Summary
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. This course aims to investigate ways in which psychologists explore human interactions, so you can gain an insight into how and why some behaviours occur.
The qualification covers key areas of psychological theory and concepts, combined with the opportunity to design and carry out small scale research project. Its applied element also looks at the everyday use and application of psychological theory, exploring current issues, such as gender identity, aggression in society and advertising.
Course Details
Year One- Certificate:
Unit One: Psychological Approaches and Applications- Exam
- Key assumptions and concepts for Cognitive, Social, Learning and Biological approaches in psychology.
- Application of psychological assumptions to explain contemporary issues of aggression in society. The use of psychology in business to explain and influence consumer/employee behaviour. Application of psychology to explain gender identity.
Unit Two: Conducting Psychological Research- Coursework
- Understand research methods and their importance in psychological inquiry
- Plan research to investigate psychological questions
- Carry out a pilot study to explore current issues in psychology
- Review implications of research into psychological inquiry
Year Two- Extended Certificate:
Unit Three: Health Psychology- Exam
- Lifestyle choice and health related behaviour applied to stress and addiction.
- Theories of stress, behavioural and physiological addiction.
- Promotion of positive behaviour change
Unit Four(option 6):Introduction to Psychopathology- Coursework
- Understand modern and historical concepts of psychopathology in society
- Examine causes, types and characteristics of mental disorders
- Explore professional approaches to the treatment of mental disorders

Entry requirements
Grade 4 or higher in GCSE English Language and a Grade 5 or higher in GCSE Maths. An average GCSE score of 5.00 or higher.
