Course Summary
Medical Science covers the science of maintaining health and the prevention and treatment of diseases. It is specifically aimed at students interested in careers in healthcare and medical research.
The qualification covers the key topics of health, physiology and disease as well as physiological measurement and medical research. Medical scientists are at the forefront of healthcare - vital in the diagnosis of disease, effectiveness of treatments and searching for new cures.
This is supported through the inclusion and knowledge of common physiological measurement instruments and what they detect.
Course Details
Unit 1: Human health and disease (1st Year Exam and pre-release)
Unit 2: Physiological measurement techniques (1st Year coursework)
Unit 3: Medical Science research methods (1st Year coursework)
These units comprise 50% of the whole qualification, with the final 50% from the second year units below:
Medicines and treatment of disease (2nd Year coursework)
Clinical laboratory techniques (2nd Year coursework, externally examined task)
Medical case study (2nd Year Exam and pre-release)
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Assessment is part internal assessment and part external assessed exams. (Across the two years, 50% internal and 50% external assessment).
- External: 2 hour exam (90 marks) which is synoptic for the whole year
- Internal: 2 equally weighted coursework tasks, worked on independently and in a given time frame.
Entry requirements
Grade 5/5 in GCSE Science Double Award or Biology/Chemistry/Physics plus a Grade 5 in English Language & Grade 4 in GCSE Maths.
Your next steps...
Applied Science programmes, such as biomedical science, life sciences, and physiology. This course is also a viable route for vocational health courses such as: nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and more.
Please note this course is not suitable if you want to study for a degree in Medicine. You must study Biology and Chemistry A level to do this.
