Course Details

THE GEOGRAPHY COURSE IS DESIGNED to highlight the mainissues and concepts that students are likely to encounter in their current and future lives both at a local and global scale; for
example climate change; and future energy supply. Students will develop informed opinions about such issues, as well as a wide-ranging knowledge of both physical and human
geography. The course will give students the opportunity to become equipped to make better-informed decisionswhilst being sensitive to a wide range of viewpoints and challenges. With climate change and sustainability forming thebackground to the news on a daily basis, there has never been a
more relevant and exciting time to study Geography at A-level!

CONTENT
In the first year students will study:
• Physical Geography: Coastal Landscapes, Earth Hazards
• Human Geography: Changing spaces, Future of food

Geographical and fieldwork skills will be taught across the human and
physical geography courses.

In the second year students will study:
• Physical Geography: Earth’s life support systems: the water and
carbon cycles.
• Human Geography: Global connections: trade and human rights

Students will also complete an independent geographical investigation
that will carry 20% of the A-level marks.

CORE SKILLS
Geography A-level develops many essential skills, including oral
and written communication, research, analysis and synthesis of
information, problem solving and critical thinking. Students will also
develop fieldwork investigation skills such as planning appropriate
methodologies and collecting primary data. They will develop skills in the
application of statistical techniques when analysing data and drawing
conclusions, along side evaluating techniques and findings. The course
provides plenty of opportunity for students to develop excellent ICT skills
and they will become familiar with interpreting a wide variety of sources
of information such as maps, satellite photos and GIS.

FIELD WORK
No Geography A-level course would be complete without a field course
and we currently offer a residential trip for Year 12 students to Yorkshire.
The cost of this trip is usually about £350 (all-inclusive), and is met by
students (although funding is available in some circumstances). This
year we are also offering some extra local fieldwork days to develop
the curriculum further, including a day at Wells-next-the-Sea, exploring
coastal processes and ecosystems.

Entry requirements

Wymondham High prefers students taking the
course to have a good GCSE at grade B or above
in Geography, however, we will consider learners
who have completed other GCSEs successfully
and would like to re-kindle their passion for
Geography by studying it at A-level.

Your next steps...

Geography is a well-respected university subject.
Some Geography graduates go on to work in
geographical fields, such as coastal management,
hydrology, environmental management,
development workers for NGOs. Some indirect
career paths see a qualification in Geography
as an advantage (e.g. civil engineering, town
planning, population planning, consultancy
work). For many students the career opportunities
are very wide, as employers value the skills that
Geography degrees equip graduates with, skills
such as: communication, project management,
analytical skills, problem-solving, team work and
the ability to work independently. Geography
graduates have one of the best records for finding
work after graduating.
