Course Details
This exciting and innovative ‘hands on’ course involves the creative use of Art Textiles with strong links to historical and contemporary printmakers and Fashion Designers. Students are taught Textiles skills such as printing, weaving, embroidery, appliqué, knitting and dyeing as well as constructing in fabric and contemporary materials. The Department organises regular visits to national and international venues and arranges workshops with textile and printmaking artists. The portfolio developed during the course is used to produce a body of work for Foundation and Degree level course applications. Digital fashion illustration and pattern design is also on offer which equips pupils with contemporary skills which are currently used in industry. The Fashion and Art Textiles course works very well alongside Art Multimedia or Fine Art and can help develop your creativity across all your subject choices.
CONT E N T
Areas of study are intended to encourage exploration within either traditional or contemporary forms where students provide a variety of creative responses through a wide range of materials, media, processes and techniques.
A LEVEL COMPONENT 1: Personal Investigation > 60% OF QUALIFICATION
Year 12 Focus:
The course emphasis is on creativity and the production of an exciting body of work within fashion and textiles. Students are taught textiles skills such as printing, weaving, embroidery, appliqué, knitting, dyeing and fabric painting as well as constructing in fabric. Working closely with specialist teachers, individual ideas and concepts are developed and explored with the students’ own imagery. Reference to modern and contemporary artists and designers are used to stimulate their own work and exciting and creative sketchbooks are used to record and display the development of the coursework journey. The project concludes with a final piece which can be a fashion garment or an artwork.
Year 13 Focus:
A LEVEL COMPONENET 2: Externally Set Assignment (ESA) > 40% OF QUALIFICATION
A theme is given out by the exam board as a starting point for students’ own ideas. A body of work is generated and presented in sketchbooks, with a final outcome produced during a 15 hour exam. Throughout the exam period pupils are supported with workshops looking at new textiles’ techniques and guided and nurtured with individual tuition.
*All units will be assessed by the Centre and externally moderated by a visiting moderator.
C A R E E R M O V E S
At the end of the course students will have a very strong technical grounding and organised portfolio of work, which is essential for interviews for entry into further, or higher education / undergraduate art, design, fashion and textile courses. Many students leave Wymondham High and gain places in the best Art Colleges in the UK. Career possibilities within textiles are varied, for example: fashion design, craft practitioner, teacher, interior design, pattern and surface design, costume design, theatre, textile designer, etc.
*Creative Industries are worth £8 million an hour to the UK economy, with a growth of almost 10%, outperforming all other sectors of UK industry. Creative Industries accounted for 1.68 million jobs, 5.6% of all UK employment.
