Application Instructions
Students will need to demonstrate an ability to study at least 3 A-level subjects by achieving an average of 38 points over 8 GCSEs with a Grade 4 at least in English and Mathematics. Students should gain a Grade 6 or above in subjects they wish to study at A Level. Points are worked out on the bases that a Grade 9 = 9 points, Grade 8 = 8 points etc.

Course Details
Resistant Materials and Graphic Products are now combined in this new course which will give students a broader knowledge of Design and Technology. Students can focus on a chosen material area for their Component 2 Design and Make Project.
In y12 students will develop and enhance their design, practical skills and technical knowledge through small scale projects.
In y13 you will complete the design and make project.
Product Design equips students with design skills for the future. Students will be able to recognise design needs and develop an understanding of how current global issues, including integrating technology, impacts on today’s world.
Product Design encourages creativity and innovation - At A level students will have the confidence to innovate and produce creative design solutions as they develop their own design brief with a client/end user.
ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES
AO1: Identify, investigate and outline design possibilities to address needs and wants.
AO2: Design and make prototypes that are fit for purpose.
AO3: Analyse and evaluate: Design decisions and outcomes, including for prototypes made by themselves and others. Wider issues in design and technology.
AO4: Demonstrate and apply knowledge and understanding of technical principles and design and making principles.
TOTAL: 100%
Maths and Science skills will be assessed in the new subject context. Maths skills will be 15% of the total qualifications.
Entry requirements
It is expected that students are passionate about
designing. They will need to have aptitude in
creativity and problem solving, and a sound
knowledge of materials and commercial
manufacturing techniques. Students can be
accepted from any of the GCSE D&T disciplines,
but Resistant Materials, Product Design or Graphic
Products is the more standard route. You will
need a grade B in the subject, as this course is
demanding, needing enthusiasm, commitment,
an open creative mind and a willingness to learn.
