Course Details
The popular Fine Art course has been designed to encourage a broad and creative contemporary approach which allows students to think and reflect critically, build on personal strengths but also develop a solid but rewarding grounding in Fine Art. The focus is predominantly 2 dimensional. We will introduce you to a host of experiences exploring Fine Art techniques and processes from diverse approaches to drawing and painting to printmaking, collage and photo/mixed media. Using traditional and new technologies you will explore images, artefacts and resources from the past and recent times, from traditional academic methods to conceptual processes. The portfolio of realised outcomes developed during the course is used to produce key evidence for Foundation and Degree level course applications to prestigious Art Colleges. Termly life drawing and frequent enrichment trips and cultural visits to local, national and international collections underpin this highly successful course in this thriving and extremely successful Department. Fine Art works very well alongside Textiles or Art Multimedia and can help develop your creativity across all your subject choices.
CONTENT
Areas of study are intended to encourage exploration within either traditional or contemporary forms where students provide a variety of creative responses through a wide range of materials, media, processes or techniques.
A LEVEL COMPONENT 1: Personal Investigation > 60% OF QUALIFICATION
Year 12 Focus:
Key skills are developed and a broader range of experimental techniques are encouraged. Critical analysis and response to artists’ work are deepened. Students are encouraged to creatively present their work in large scale A2 sketch books, which support their normally ambitious and creative final outcomes.
Year 13 Focus:
A LEVEL COMPONENT 2: Externally Set Assignment (ESA) > 40% OF QUALIFICATION
A theme is given out by the exam board as a starting point for students’ own ideas. A body of work is generated and presented in A2/A3 sketchbooks, with a final outcome produced during a 15 hour exam.
*All units will be assessed by the Centre and externally moderated by a visiting moderator.
CAREER MOVES
At the end of the course students will have a very strong technical grounding and organised portfolio of work, which is essential for interviews for entry into further, or higher education/ undergraduate art and design courses. Many students leave Wymondham High and gain places in the best Art Colleges in the UK. Career possibilities within art and design are vast, for example: artist, fashion illustrator; teacher, technician, conservation officer; set designer and illustrator.
*Creative Industries are worth £8 million an hour to the UK economy, with a growth of almost 10%, outperforming all other sectors of UK industry. Creative Industries accounted for 1.68 million jobs, 5.6% of all UK employment.
