History - A Level

Student entry into our Sixth Form requires 5 grade 4 GCSE's or above including English and Maths.

If you studied the applied subject at GCSE we are asking for a grade 5 in that subjects (Grade 6 in Maths)

The study of History in the Sixth Form offers students the opportunity to develop their understanding of the past by learning to interpret, analyse and evaluate evidence and interpretations across a wide period of History from the 15 th to the 20 th Centuries. As well as learning to think, analyse and argue you will develop the ability to write clear and concise answers to historical debates.

THE COURSE

UNIT 1 The Tudors; England, 1485-1603

The Tudor dynasty, from Henry VII to Elizabeth I, represents a key turning point in the history of this country. As part of this varied and stimulating breadth study, spanning 118 years, students will identify and analyse significant examples of change and continuity across a range of key themes. You will evaluate the causes and outcomes of Henry VIII’s break with Rome and the impact of this on subsequent religious turmoil and division in England. You will assess how Tudor monarchs, through their relations with foreign powers, began the process that would ultimately lead to England becoming a dominant world power. Moreover, students will identify threats to the power and majesty of Tudor monarchy throughout this period; a study of key rebellions will facilitate an understanding of the nature and values of Tudor society and attitudes to royal power.

UNIT 2 Revolution and dictatorship: Russia, 1917-1953

On the night of 17 th July 1918, Tsar Nicholas II, the former emperor of Russia, his wife and five children were led to a basement and were shot in cold blood, their bodies then placed in acid to hide the murders. This was but the start of the violence and bloodshed that was to grip Russia in the next few decades. This vibrant depth study includes the Revolution of 1917, Civil War, The Terror, World War Two and the start of the Cold War as well as the impact of the communist regime on the people.

UNIT 3 Coursework: Historical Investigation

A personal study based on one of the most important topics of the last century – the Changing Rights of Women in Britain 1850-1970. In lessons you will be guided through the key concepts, individuals and events of the 19 th and 20 th centuries, with an aim to engage in current historical debates. We will ask important questions, such as: were the suffragettes a force for good? Or were they a terrorist organisation? How have women been treated in the workplace? What impact did the First World War have on women’s rights?

If applying for an A Level course that you have studied at GCSE it is expected that you would attain a minimum of a Grade 5 in this subject.
