Application Instructions

Student entry into our Sixth Form requires 5 grade 4 GCSE's or above including English and Maths.

If you studied the applied subject at GCSE we are asking for a grade 5 in that subjects (Grade 6 in Maths)

Course Details

We believe that continuing the study of mathematics after GCSE is very important for the vast majority of students and Core Maths is one way to achieve this. Maths is required for a wide range of post-16 and higher education qualifications and used in numerous professions.

The main focus of Core Maths is to use and apply mathematics and statistics to solve real life problems. A student who takes this qualification will work towards the following outcomes

  • Sound understanding of mathematical concepts
  • Fluency with problem solving skills
  • Confidence with applying mathematical and statistical skills to solving real life problems
  • Competency in interpreting and explaining solutions.

It is a relatively new level 3 qualification which students would complete in one year

Who is it for?

Core maths is a valuable qualification for all those students taking A levels with a mathematical content (Sciences, Economics, Geography, Computing and Psychology, Sport Science and PE) but who prefer not to undertake the full academic rigour of the Maths A level. The skills encountered are also important in the workplace and in higher education.

It is worth 20 UCAS points and universities often reduce their entry requirements if students have a Core Maths qualification

How is it taught?

The general approach in lessons will be to tackle real life problems and learn about the mathematical and statistical skills and techniques to solve them. Group work and discussion will feature regularly in lessons. The use of technology – in particular spreadsheets – is an integral part of the course.

What is the content of the course?

The course has a compulsory content which includes: analysis of data, finance and mathematical modelling.

Students also do one of the three optional units: statistical techniques, critical path analysis or graphical techniques.
