Course Summary

https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/economics/as-and-a-level/economics-7135-7136/specification-at-a-glance

Economics is a ‘social science’ that examines the behaviours of individuals and their interaction with firms and the external environment - local and global economies. The course will examine the rules, concepts and theories that are the key drivers, and questions why things happen within an economy and their impact.

Students do not need to have studied Economics at KS4 to enrol onto KS5 Economics.

Economics requires logical thinking, an interest in current affairs and the ability to analyse key concepts, discuss economic themes and be self-directed in terms of research and evidence collection.

In this current Covid climate, knowing why decisions are being made by governments and world leaders to kick-start growth within the economy is important. Understanding the policies and support packages that have been set up for individuals, and industry are explored. This will enrich your understanding, initially of basic theories linked to scarcity of resources, supply and demand, inequality and poverty, financial systems and market failure, amongst others. This will make your learning experience more dynamic, applicable and transferable to the real world..

You could in addition with other Level 3 qualifications apply to university to do a Degree in Economics, or decide to focus on a financial and investment pathway or study with Business or Maths. You could apply to do a more vocational route, to include a wide variety of financial apprenticeship opportunities and higher apprenticeship opportunities from Level 4.

The skills you acquire during your A level will also equip you with the essential tools to enter straight into employment and a career with a financial, social science or business focus.

Economics is a well-established academic subject. We have economists from Sprowston who now work for central government in the Treasury as well as in different areas of local government.

Popular destinations are accountancy, banking and insurance while a number of students have become university lecturers, as well as teachers.

Economics clearly can lead in a variety of exciting directions.
