Course Details

This course gives you the skills and understanding to make decisions about the way chemistry affects your everyday life by applying concepts into a range of contemporary areas of chemistry. In addition, an A Level in Chemistry allows you to develop a range of generic skills requested by both employers and universities. A Chemist will be an effective problem solver, communicator and be able to handle data. You will build up your practical skills and develop a firm understanding of health and safety issues through a variety of experimental work.

Year 1 Units

  • Atomic Structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, kinetics and equilibria.
  • Alkanes, alkenes and alcohols.
  • Periodicity, group 2 and group 7.
  • Acids, bases and pH.

Year 2 Units

  • Redox, thermodynamics, electrode potentials.
  • Aromatic chemistry, carbonyl compounds, amines, polymers, synthesis, NMR.
  • Period 3, transition metals, aqueous ions.

Entry requirements

GCSE Double Science 6-6 or GCSE Chemistry 6 plus another science at grade 6 | Mathematics 5 | English 5

Progression into the second year of the course is reliant on students achieving a minimum D grade in the End of Year 1 Exam.
