Financial help: post-16

Depending on your circumstances you may be able to access various sources of financial help.

It's also worth talking to the student services at the college, sixth form or training provider you're attending to see whether there is any other financial help available to you.

Travel costs

The Mason Trust - Education and employment grant

The Mason Trust's 'Small Change' Grant provides small sums of money to help young people in Norfolk and Suffolk take that next step through education, training, work or along their chosen career path.

Accommodation costs

If you need to study away from home for a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification (equivalent to GCSEs or A levels) you might be able to get help with the cost of term-time accommodation. You may also qualify if the course is too far away for you to travel to daily.

Child Benefit

If you stay in full-time education your parents can continue to claim Child Benefit, unless one of them has an individual income of more than £60,000. They may also be able to continue claiming other benefits such as Child Tax Credit.

Care to Learn

If you're a parent and under 20 at the start of your course, and your course qualifies, you may be able to get help with childcare costs.

Dance and Drama Awards

You could get a Dance and Drama Award to help with fees and living costs at one of 15 private dance and drama schools.  You must be 16 or over and show talent and a likelihood to succeed in the industry.

You may be able to get help from a charitable trust - try Family Action's Grants Programmes.

Free meals

If you received free school meals or if your parents/carers are claiming certain benefits you may be able to get a free meal on the days you attend your sixth form or college.  Speak to the sixth form or college in the first instance.

Client Hardship Service

People struggle financially for many reasons. The Client Hardship Service (CHS) team wants to help you to manage better and for things to improve.

Redhouse Youth Trust

Grants are for up to £2,500 and are for young people aged under 21 years who are resident in the County of Norfolk. (conditions apply)

Mancroft Advice Project (MAP) benefit advice

MAP offers support and advice sessions on benefits, debt management, other financial and mental health support. With centres in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn, you can also phone or email - full details on their website.

Go4Less

The Go4Less card is a free sport, leisure and culture discount card which allows up to 50 per cent discount at council facilities, as well as various activities and events around the city.
