Guidance around working while you're still at school

You can get a part-time job while you're still at school but you're only allowed to do some types of work and can only work certain hours.

  • The youngest age you can be to work part-time is 13.  
  • There are types of work that you can and cannot do and you can only work certain hours (see below).
  • By law you must also have a work permit.
  • Norfolk County Council has lots of information on it's website about child employment where you can also download a work permit application form.

During term time

You can work a maximum of 12 hours per week, this includes:

  • a maximum of 2 hours on school days and Sundays
  • a maximum of 5 hours on Saturdays for 13-14 year olds, or 8 hours for 15-16 year olds
  • you cannot work before 7.00am or after 7.00pm

In the school holidays

13-14 year olds can work a maximum of 25 hours a week.  This includes:

  • a maximum of 5 hours on weekdays and Saturdays
  • a maximum of 2 hours on Sunday

15-16 year olds can work a maximum of 35 hours a week.  This includes:

  • a maximum of 8 hours on weekdays and Saturdays
  • a maximum of 2 hours on Sunday

The above will not apply once you reach school leaving date which is the last Friday in June of Year 11.
