Who is this course for?

Our Supporting Teaching and Learning course has been designed to give you an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. This is particularly relevant if you are interested in a teaching assistant role. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young peoples development, supporting children and young peoples positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.

What will I do on this course?

The mandatory units are:

Understand Schools and Colleges as Organisations
Understand Children and Young People's Development
Safeguarding Children and Young People
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in a Learning Environment for Children and Young People
Maintain Relationships with Children and Young People
Support the Health and Safety of Children and Young People
Support Positive Behaviour in a Learning Environment for Children and Young People
Contribute to Teamwork in a Learning Environment
Understand Children and Young People's Play and Leisure
Promote an Effective Learning Environment
Provide Displays in a Learning Environment
One day a week placement in a school or college local to you (150 hours per academic year)

Entry requirements

You will need:

4 or more GCSEs at grade 3 or above, which must include both English Language and maths.
Ideally students will have at least one from English and maths at GCSE grade 4 or higher
An enhanced DBS check

Or (for internal applicants):

A relevant Level 1 qualification, such as Level 1 Diploma Introduction to Health, Social Care and Young People's Settings, and satisfactory progress in your English Language and maths last year
An enhanced DBS check

You will be invited to an information session to help us ensure the course is right for you
