Course Summary
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Students will learn about a range of styles of music within 4 modules over 2 years. They must study 3 compulsory units: Ensemble Music Performance, Practical Music Theory and Harmony (applying this to a composition) and Professional Practice in the Music Industry. The optional units include Composing Music, Solo Performance and Improvising Music. Students will learn to work independently and will enjoy the opportunity for practical music making in all areas of the course.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?
Assessment for this course is 25% exams and 75% non-examined. Two units are externally assessed with the first asking learners to research and create a project plan in response to a music industry scenario which musicians may find themselves in (e.g. performance events or creative enterprises). The second asks learners to choose (from a provided song list) 3 pieces that they will perform as an ensemble. They will develop this over time with part of the final assessment being a performance. Non-examined units will involve learners creating and performing pieces to demonstrate an understanding of musical theory, composing music of their choice, developing a solo performance and demonstrating skill in improvisation. These modules will be completed over 2 years with students creating a portfolio of evidence that will be a mixture of written work, audio and visual recordings to demonstrate improvement and development over the course.
