*Please choose 3 subject courses from different blocks, you will automatically be added to Maths or English resit classes on enrolment if you do not achieve required 4 in Maths or English Lit/Lang but you must still meet requirements for entry per subject.

Course Summary

What will I need to study this course?

· You will need a love of reading, creative writing, and the ability to write extended responses.

· You will need an enquiring mind, and an ability to analyse writers’ ideas, language and themes.

· You should have at least a grade 5 in English Literature and English Language GCSE.

· (*This part of the course is based on studying linguistics – the scientific study of language.)

Course Details

What will I study?

· Paper 1 (40%) - Telling Tales. Core texts and areas of study:

o Remembered places: AQA Anthology: Paris non-fiction extracts (closed book)

o Imagined world: ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood (open book)

o Poetic Voices: selected poetry of Carol-Ann Duffy (open book)

o These texts are taught alongside an exploration of the language of tales explored through phonetics, phonology, prosodics, lexis and semantics, grammar and discourse.

· Paper 2 (40%) – Exploring Conflict. Core texts and areas of study:

o Writing about society – ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitgerald (open book) (adapting the text to respond to creative re-writing tasks and write critical commentaries about your choices.)

o Dramatic encounters – ‘Othello’ by William Shakespeare (open book)

o These texts are taught alongside an exploration of the language of conflict: interactions, power and positioning in talk, group and individual identity.

· Coursework (20%) - Making Connections -

o 2500-3000 words

o Explore connections across language and literary genres based on a theme or idea.

Challenges: You will do a lot of independent reading and research outside of lessons.

Skills Building: You will learn to interpret and compare a text’s themes, methods, and context. You will learn to analyse language while using it effectively in your in writing – to write both creative and extended responses.

Students are required to have achieved a grade 5 or above in both English Literature and English Language at GCSE.
