Art & Design - Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate Fashion & Clothing

Student entry into our Sixth Form requires 5 grade 4 GCSE's or above including English and Maths.

If you studied the applied subject at GCSE we are asking for a grade 5 in that subjects (Grade 6 in Maths)

The Level 3 in Fashion & Clothing will give you the specialist skills to become part of the expanding British fashion industry. You will practice industry standard techniques in pattern cutting, garment production and CAD (Computer Aided Design). This course is ideal if you enjoy Design and Technology or other art based subjects or, more specifically, fashion and textile related projects and you are looking for a pathway to higher level courses, with a range of potential future careers in Fashion Design, Fashion Technology, Fashion Promotion and Styling, Fashion Management and Textiles.

This course is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects as assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. If you want to develop your potential for creative work in the fashion industry, then this course will give you the opportunity to explore a range of materials, media and technical skills associated with overall Design and more specifically, Fashion design and Clothing.

• COURSE CONTENT
  

  You will work in sketchbooks using the design cycle to develop ideas to a professional standard. You will explore mark making techniques, textile exploration and illustration techniques to communicate your final ideas. Understanding characteristics of a wide range of fashion materials and processes is essential to success in today’s competitive and constantly evolving fashion industry.

  A future fashion contributor needs to have a broad understanding of design, technical and construction processes, being able to experiment with them to develop ideas for fashion and textile outcomes. You will need to know about the history of fashion, the different styles and trends that have come and gone over the last century, and be able to use what you have learnt to create new and exciting designs for the future.

  
  

Over the 2 years 4 units will be studied.

2 Units are externally set and assessed and comprise of preparation time in class followed by an exam to reflect on their work undertaken. 1 external exam is during Year 12 and 1 during Year 13.

2 Units are internally set and assessed and develop design and practical skills resulting in a final made product

Your progress will be continuously monitored, assessed and verified by your tutor. You will keep a record of your achievement in a portfolio, which together with your final outcomes/artworks will be verified externally by an Examining Board.

GCSE grade 5 or higher in a related Design and Technology subject or BTEC level 2 at Merit or higher in a related subject area.

You could continue your studies at university and specialise in a specific subject area of fashion and textiles (Fashion Design, Promotion and Styling, Visual Merchandising, Buying/Merchandiser, Manufacturing Technology, Tailoring, etc.), or progress onto an apprenticeship. Alternatively, you could find employment in fashion or textile related industries.
