Application Instructions

For All courses except Beauty - choose three first choice subjects from four different option blocks. You will be asked just before submitting your application to choose three second choice subjects. They must be from the same Option Blocks as you first choices. For instance, if your first three choices are from Blocks A,B and D your second choice courses must also be from Blocks A, B and D

For Beauty just choose this subject by itself.

In order to follow an academic Level 3 programme of study you must achieve five or more GCSE (or equivalent) Grade 5 or above, including English Language or Literature and Mathematics.

In order to follow a vocational or mixed Level 3 programme of study, it is desirable that you achieve five or more GCSE (or equivalent) Grade 5 or above, including English Language or Literature and Mathematics. Those students without a 4 in English or mathematics, will take a level 2 qualification in these as part of their studies.

In addition you must achieve the GCSE grades specified for individual subjects which is outlined under each of the course descriptions

Course Summary

The creative industries in this country are huge and bring in over 100 billion GDP to the British economy each year. There are many opportunities for creative talent and thinkers to thrive in the workforce. This course is designed to promote learning across a variety of experiences and through various processes, tools, techniques, materials and resources to develop and generate personal creative outcomes. You will be offered the opportunities to work in a range of disciplines including, painting, print-making, sculpture, installation, illustration, fashion, textiles, photography, or a combination of these. Your work and ideas will be informed through regular art and design history sessions in order to expand your knowledge and understanding of art, craft, design and media in contemporary and past societies and cultures. This will be supported by visits and workshops with artists, designers and galleries. The skills you will develop are creativity, independence, imagination, experimentation, problem-solving, expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement.

Course Details

  • Component 1: The Personal Investigation consists of two integrated parts: 1. a major in-depth critical, practical and theoretical investigative project. 2. an extended written element that explores a relevant theme linked to your coursework unit.
  • Component 2: Externally Set Assignment The Externally Set Assignment consists of two parts: Part 1: Preparatory study period The externally set assignment materials are to be released from 1 February (in the second year of the course) and will consist of a series of visual and written stimuli, which are to be presented to you at the start of the preparatory study period. One of the stimuli is to be selected and used as a starting point from which to elicit a personal response. Responses are developed during the preparatory study period. They should take the form of critical, practical and theoretical preparatory work/supporting studies which inform the resolution of ideas in the 15 hours sustained focus study.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will develop as an independent artist over this course. You will receive workshops and 1:1 tutorials from your art teachers who will help you develop a personal and exciting body of work. You need to be committed to putting in the time to practice and refine your skills as well as ensuring you meet your deadlines and act upon the advice and feedback.

Entry requirements

In order to follow an academic Level 3 programme of study you should have achieved five or more GCSE (or equivalent) Grade 5s or above, including English* and mathematics.

In addition you should have achieved the GCSE grade 6 in Art – GCSE Art is compulsory.
