Course Summary
The course concentrates on the mastery of Spanish and it demands a high level of interest in a wide range of modern issues and current affairs. The As/A level course offers the opportunity to study film, literature and history alongside the culture, politics and social aspects of the Spanish speaking world. Spanish is the official language of 21 countries and more than 410 million people speak Spanish as their native language.
You will have access to specialist computer applications, literature and a range of foreign language films. You will learn about Spain and gain valuable insights into the culture of the country.
The four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking will be practised in each lesson. Not only will you achieve an advanced level of Spanish, you will also develop a deeper understanding of society and global issues, particularly those pertaining to the Spanish speaking world.

Second year
- Multiculturalism in Hispanic society
- Aspects of political life in Hispanic society
Study of a novel “Como agua para chocolate” and revision of all first year topics.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
A combination of oral, listening, reading and essay writing will be assessed in 3 examinations at the end of the AS year.

Entry requirements
Grade 6 in GCSE Spanish and at least a Grade 5 in GCSE English Language. An average GCSE score of 5.50 or higher.

Study of a foreign language not only opens the doors to language degrees, but also combines well with any other subject at University level.
