Course Summary

Classical Civilisation is the course for you if you enjoy:

- Analysing the thinking and traditions of the ancient world

-Exploring ancient texts and their writers’ intentions

-Studying a mixed discipline that combines interests in English Literature, History and Archaeology.

Classical Civilisation will offer you a broad, coherent and rewarding study of the literature and culture of the classical world. You will study elements of the literature, visual/material culture and thought of the classical world, and acquire an understanding of their social, historical and cultural contexts

Course Details

The two AS exams are on The World of the Hero (paper 1) and Greek Theatre (paper 2). For Paper 1 you will study Homer’s ‘The Odessey’ and for paper 2 the following Greek tragedies: Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, Euripides’ Bacchae as well as the comedy Aristophanes’ Frogs. This component involves the study of the physical theatre space itself used by the Greeks to stage their dramas, and also depictions of this staging in a selection of Vases.
