Philosophy is an activity: it is a way of thinking about certain sorts of question. Its most distinctive feature is its use of logical argument. Philosophers typically deal in arguments: they either invent them, criticise other people, or do both. This course will examine the works of Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Russell, Wittgenstein and many others. Why study philosophy? It deals with the fundamental questions about the meaning of our existence. Why are we here? Is there any proof that God exists? Is there any purpose to our lives? What makes anything right or wrong? Are we simply physical beings? How does science progress? It is vital we examine such questions, some may even argue that an unexamined life is not worth living. Another reason for studying philosophy is that you will learn to think clearly about a wide range of issues. Methods of philosophy such as evaluation, analysis, critical reading and debate ensure that you will be able to transfer your skills to many future subjects and careers. This A-level is comprised of the philosophy and ethics modules of the wider Religious Studies specification.
