Course Summary
There is no denying the importance of Media or how much we have come to rely on it; the new A-level in Media Studies looks holistically at the institutions behind various media platforms and the audiences that consume them. The way people, places and events are represented will form a large part of the course and you will also focus on different platforms and how they have come to converge alongside the study of media language. Throughout the course you will be given the opportunity to study music videos, video games, advertising, film marketing, newspapers and news/current affairs programmes.
Course Details
Particular areas of study include:
- The Media Theoretical Framework – looking at Film, Advertising and Marketing, Radio, Magazines, Video Games and Music Video.
- Long Form Television Drama
- News and Online Media
- Media Language and Representation
- Creating a Media Product
- Creating a Cross-media Product
You will also be presented with opportunities to attend film screenings and a trip to London to visit the British Film Institute and Warner Bros. Studios.

Exam - 70%
Coursework - 30%
Entry requirements
Grade 4 or above in GCSE or iGCSE English Language. An average GCSE score of 4.80 or higher. Grade C/4 or above in at least four GCSE / BTEC subjects.
Your next steps...
You will take away an insight into how the media works and how it functions in and affects contemporary society. In addition to this you can create an electronic portfolio of your written work and digital media products, published on the internet, which can be used for Higher Education and job interviews.
