Course Summary

Mathematics is recognised as being one of the most desirable A-levels in order to progress into higher education and improves your career prospects in any field of employment.

Studying A-Level Mathematics will:

- provide a stimulating and challenging course;

- develop key employability skills such as problem-solving, logical reasoning, communication and resilience;

- increase your knowledge and understanding of mathematical techniques and their applications;

- support the study of other A-Level subjects;

- provide excellent preparation for a wide range of university courses;

- lead to a versatile qualification which is well-respected by employers and higher education.

Course Details

Two thirds of the course consists of “pure maths” – building on the algebra topics you have covered at GCSE and leading onto the study of calculus. Other topics you will cover in pure maths include trigonometry & graphs, polynomials and coordinate geometry.

The remainder of the course content is split equally between statistics (representing and analysing data, working with statistical distributions and hypothesis testing) and mechanics (kinematics, forces and motion, projectiles).

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment

AS Maths: 2 x 1hr 30 min exams taken at the end of Year 1:

Paper 1: Pure & Statistics

Paper 2: Pure & Mechanics

(both exams are equally weighted towards your AS grade)

A-Level Maths: 3 x 2hr exams taken at the end of Year 2:

Paper 1: Pure Mathematics

Paper 2: Pure & Statistics

Paper 3: Pure & Mechanics

(all 3 exams are equally weighted and it is these 3 exams only which contribute to your final A-Level grade)

Entry requirements

Preferably a grade 7 at GCSE Maths. Students with a grade 6 must also take Maths Extra as an Enhance option (1 lesson a week).

Your next steps...
