Course Summary

Geology is a practical, multidisciplinary science. Geologists are scientific detectives who try to reveal the past and predict the future of the Earth, studying rocks, earthquakes, volcanoes and the landforms of the planet. Fossils are studied to help understand the evolution of life. Geologists also play a leading role in managing natural materials such as water supplies, energy resources and mineral deposits.

Course Details

You will study:

- Global tectonics

- The rock cycle

- Economic geology

- Evolution of life, earth and climate

- Geological hazards

- Practical tasks including fieldwork

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Exam - 80%

Coursework - 20%

Assessment

- AS level: one paper (2 hours 30 minutes, does not count towards A level).

- A level: 3 papers: Fundamentals of geology (110 marks, 2 hours 15 minutes, 41% of A level); Scientific literacy in geology (100 marks, 2 hours 15 minutes, 37% of A level); Practical skills in geology (60 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes, 22% of A level).

- There is also a practical endorsement in geology to complete over the two years.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language and a Grade 5 or higher GCSE Maths. Two grade 5's or higher in GCSE Sciences (Core, Additional or Biology, Chemistry or Physics). An average GCSE score of 5.20 or higher. Grade 5 or higher in GCSE Geography is desirable.
