What will I need to study this course?
· You need to be interested in how people use both written and spoken language
· You need to be able to write accurate extended responses which are both analytical and creative.
· You should have at least a grade 5 in both English Literature and English Language at GCSE. 
· * This is not the same focus as the GCSE English Language course.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

What will I study?

· Language and Society: You will learn how gender, jobs, social groups, and regions affect language. You'll use special terms to analyse these influences. 

· New Vocabulary: You'll learn a lot of new words to help you analyse writing and use these terms in your own writing. 

· Language Change and Development: You'll study how language changes over time, how children learn to speak and write, and how world English and ethnicity affect language use. 

· Coursework: You will complete three pieces of writing:  

1.   Investigate an area of language. 

2.   Create a piece of original writing. 

3.   Write a commentary on your work. 

  Challenges: You'll need to read a lot about these topics and do some independent research, including studying linguistic theories. 

Entry requirements

What will I need to study this course?
Students need an interest in the way people use language (both written and spoken) and an ability to write clear and controlled English.

Students should have achieved at least a grade 5 in both English Literature and English Language at GCSE.

This course can lead to a degree in any subject that involves communication, work in the media, teaching, research, politics, and almost any job that involves writing or speaking skills. Some scientists also study it to help in medical training, like speech therapy.
