What is a supported internship?
A Supported Internship is a study programme delivered by a training provider for young people with SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) who are work-ready but require additional support to secure employment. Support is provided in the workplace by a Job Coach employed by the training organisation.
The Job Coach will take the time to understand your business and will support the intern in learning and carrying out their duties, gradually reducing the level of support as the intern becomes more confident and settled in the role. The expected outcome is that the intern progresses into a paid role within your company or moves on to an Apprenticeship. There is no cost to the employer, and the benefits of offering a Supported Internship are numerous:
A number of providers in Norfolk offer Supported Internship programmes, including City College Norwich, the College of West Anglia in King’s Lynn, East Coast College in Great Yarmouth, Ixion Holdings (operating across Norfolk), and The Wherry School.
If your business is interested in offering a Supported Internship, please contact Pam Birt, SEND Employment Officer at Norfolk County Council, to discuss your options: pamela.birt@norfolk.gov.uk
