This course consists of 594 Guided Learning Hours, spread out across the academic year. Students attend 3 days per week. Students can join this course up to April 2024. Students who join the course later in the year may need to attend 4 days per week, and will achieve either an Award or a Certificate. Students who join the course later in the year may need to attend 4 days per week. Start date and end date is approximate and may be subject to change.

Course Summary

The Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s Settings course is designed to teach students the development of humans from early to elder years.

This units of this course teach students to develop a broad range of skills such as:

  • Understand the range of service provision and roles within H&SC (adults, children, young people), early years and childcare
  • Understand the principles and values in health and social care (adults, children and young people), early years and childcare
  • Awareness of protection and safeguarding in H&SC (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
  • Introductory awareness of communication, health & safety, equality & inclusion, and person-centred support in health, social care and children’s and young people’s settings

The course is theory based, but practical tasks have been introduced to make it as hands on and practical as possible. Students will use realistic dolls to dress and learn how to deliver personal care. They will learn how to make up baby bottles for safely feeding a new born, and they will learn techniques to support dementia patients.

The assessments of the course are in the form of creative displays, rather than lots of essay writing.

This course can set students up for further Level 2 study in Health and Social Care or apprenticeships in the industry. It is designed to introduce students to careers in Childcare, Paramedics, Nursing, Caring, Midwifery and other Healthcare.

Course Details

This course is suitable for a young people wanting to develop skills and knowledge required for working in the health and social care sector. The units will cover the following:

  • The role of the social worker
  • Duty of care
  • Safeguarding
  • Health and safety
  • Effective and professional communication

Additional information:

Students who have A-C/4-9 grade GCSE’s will NOT be required to complete Maths and English qualifications.

Students who do not have GCSE’s A-C, or 4 and above will be required to complete Maths and English qualifications.

Work Experience – a 2 week/8-day work placement will be arranged whilst on programme to build employability skills.

Enrichment – Careers Advice, sexual and mental health talks, Matthew Project drug and alcohol talks, Apprenticeship support, Employability days.

Bursary is available to support students with a household income of under £30,000. This can include food allowance and travel support (bus/train).

Welfare Support Team – Wellbeing support, housing advice, financial advice, drug and alcohol support, behavioural and engagement support. (As appropriate)

Structure of day – An average day is 9.15am – 3.30pm. Flexibility of their programme can be discussed alongside individual needs.

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for GCSE's as students will be supported to achieve Maths and English qualifications whilst on the programme (if you have not achieved A-C or 9-4 grade GCSE).

An initial assessment will be carried out at the interview stage as student will require a certain level of literacy and numeracy skills.

This course is suitable for 16 - 18 year olds (or up to 25 with an EHCP).

Aged 16+ will be supported to achieve maths and English qualifications whilst on the programme (if you have not achieved A-C or 9-4 grade GCSE).

Aged 16+ will be placed within relevant work experience with local employers whilst on the programme.
