Course Summary
The purpose of the Level 3 Performance and Excellence is to develop and progress students towards their intended career pathway of working within sports performance destinations within the industry. Bridging any knowledge gaps from finishing GCSEs to their course. This pathways is designed to support an students elite performance journey alongside their vocational studies, this is done through allocated training and strength and conditioning sessions (and if applicable, fixtures).
During their academic journey students will be provided with opportunities and experiences which will aid their development and help them engage with those from the industry they are aiming to become part of. The course allows learners to study alongside training and competing in their desired sport to enable them to reach the highest standards they can.
Year 1 Units: Anatomy and Physiology (Exam), Fitness Training (Exam), Professional Development, Sports Leadership, Practical Sports Performance, Sports Psychology and Application of Fitness.
Example Year 2 Units: Coaching for Performance, Research Methods, Sports Development, Investigating Business (Exam), Skill Acquisition (Exam).
Your timetable will also consist of tutorial sessions, learning support sessions and (if required) English and Maths.
Your training and fixture schedule will be arranged around your curriculum timetable. You will be in 4-5days a week.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Assessments are conducted in a variety of ways. You will be assessed by external exams for 2 of your units each year. The rest of the assessments can consist of assignment based assessment, observations, presentations and interviews.
Entry requirements
5 GCSE’s at grade 4 and above (including English Language and Mathematics).
If a progressing level 2 student, you will be required to have finished your level 2 with a Merit overall (with a Level 2 Pass in the Anatomy and Physiology Exam) and must have passed either GCSE Maths or English Language.
You must also be performing in your sport at an elite level. A minimum requirement would be county level. Evidence of this, along with references will be required.

On successful completion of your Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence Pathway), options could include study a degree at a University or College. City College Norwich offers a BSc (Hons) Sport, Health and Exercise Science.

The sport and active leisure industry supports over 450,000 jobs in the UK. Over the last five years it has become a £20 billion industry and experts predict it will continue to grow faster than other sectors in the economy.
This course will allow you to progress onto many careers which include sport and exercise scientist or psychology, a gym instructor or leisure centre assistant, personal trainer, sport development, sports nutrition and sports physiotherapist. Some of these careers will require further study at degree level. If you are looking for a career in non-sports physiotherapy this may be a suitable pathway but check with your university or college of choice.
