Course Summary

Sociology is the study of society and of people and their behaviour, especially the study of the origins, organisation, institutions, and development of patterns within human society. Sociologists produce theories using evidence-based research, and Sociology has many practical applications, for example in the development of social policies.

Subjects Covered:

. Families and households eg. couples, childhood, theories of the family

. Education eg. class/gender/ethnic differences in achievement, the role of education in society

. Sociological research methods eg. examining the way in which sociologists conduct social research

. Crime and Deviance eg. theories of criminal behaviour, social distribution of crime

. Media eg. the impact of social media on contemporary society
