Course Instructions

Most students will choose the equivalent of 3 A Levels but in some circumstances a maximum of 4. These are subjects that will continue for the full two years. Select only one subject from each option block (choosing more than 1 course from the same block will delay your application as courses from each block are timetabled at the same time). All courses are equivalent to 1 A Level except where specified differently below.

Dereham Education & Soccer Academy Including BTEC Diploma in Sport (equivalent to three A Level subjects, no other subject choices required).

If your choice of subjects are not available due to limitations of the blocks, please email us with the details: office@derehamsixthform.norfolk.sch.uk

Course Details

Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions. Sociology’s subject matter is diverse, ranging from crime to education, from the family to the state, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture. Unifying the study of these diverse subjects is sociology’s purpose: understanding how human action and consciousness both shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures.

Sociology can be an excellent subject to study alongside other humanities subjects. It develops skills such as analysis, evaluation and literacy. This makes it an ideal subject when applying to university and people with an A Level in Sociology have gone on to study degrees in Nursing, Teaching, Social Work, Social Policy, Media, Criminology, Law and History.

Sociology is extremely topical and will suit those who take a critical interest in the world around them. We follow the AQA specification, a course that provides an excellent and broad introduction to sociology.

Over the two years of the A Level you will study the following:

  • Families and households
  • Education and research methods
  • The mass media
  • Crime and deviance
  • Theory and methods

Assessment

You will sit three 2 hour examinations at the end of the two year course.

Entry requirements

“I originally chose A Level Sociology as it went well with Law, however, I have grown to love the subject and the insight it gives you into society. It is the most interesting subject I take.”
