Course Summary

This course involves the scientific study of mind and behaviour, looking at how and why people behave the way they do.

You will learn about the different approaches to psychology and some key studies, as well as developing the knowledge necessary for undertaking any psychological research project. The course aims to broaden your understanding of human behaviour, by exploring both internal and external influences.

Memory (Cognitive Psychology)
Attachment (Developmental Psychology)
Approaches in Psychology (Origins of psychology, the basic assumptions of each approach)
Psychopathology (Individual Differences; defining and treating abnormality)
Research methods.
A-level (Year 2)
In addition to the first year AS topics you will also study; Biological Psychology plus a selection from the following areas of psychology; Relationships, Gender, Cognitive and Developmental, Schizophrenia, Eating Disorders, Stress, Aggression, Forensic, Addiction and Gender.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

For AS there are two written exams, taken at the end of the academic year. Each is one hour and a half long.

For the linear A Level, there are three written exams taken at the end of the second year, each two hours long, covering the content from both years of the course.

There is no assessed coursework.

There will be numerous opportunities for you to develop your exam skills and assess your knowledge, as we run mock exams regularly throughout both years.

Research methods are examined in both years.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 or higher in GCSE English Language and Maths with Grade 4 in GCSE Science is essential. A Science subject is required whether Core, Additional, Biology, Chemistry or Physics. BTEC Science will be accepted as a substitute. You will also need to have a GCSE score of at least 5.40.
