Course Instructions

Most students will choose the equivalent of 3 A Levels but in some circumstances a maximum of 4. These are subjects that will continue for the full two years. Select only one subject from each option block (choosing more than 1 course from the same block will delay your application as courses from each block are timetabled at the same time). All courses are equivalent to 1 A Level except where specified differently below.

Dereham Education & Soccer Academy Including BTEC Diploma in Sport (equivalent to three A Level subjects, no other subject choices required).

If your choice of subjects are not available due to limitations of the blocks, please email us with the details: office@derehamsixthform.norfolk.sch.uk

Course Details

Psychology is the science of the mind. The human mind is the most complex machine on Earth. It is the source of all thought and behaviour. Psychologists study human behaviour as a clue to the workings of the mind. Everything we do, think, feel and say psychologists take as raw data for testing their theories about how the mind works.

Psychology can be an excellent subject to study alongside both science and humanities subjects. It develops skills such as analysis, evaluation, numeracy and literacy. This makes it an ideal subject when applying to university and people with an A Level in Psychology have gone on to study degree in Nursings, Teaching, Medicine, Social Work, Physiotherapy and Zoology, as well as Psychology itself. It is one of the most popular subjects at the College. This is a reflection of the quality of teaching, support for students and the consistently excellent results our students achieve.

We follow the AQA specification, a course that provides an excellent and broad introduction to psychology.

Over the two years of the A Level you will study the following:

  • Social influence
  • Memory
  • Attachment
  • Approaches in psychology
  • Psychopathology
  • Research methods
  • Biopsychology
  • Issues and debates in psychology
  • Cognition and development
  • Schizophrenia
  • Forensic psychology

Assessment

You will be assessed at the end of the two year course through three examinations of two hours each.

What do our students think of A Level Psychology?

“Psychology is the only science which can be applied to social situations. It helps me understand how society while at the same time applying scientific method. I really love it!”

“Psychology is my favourite subject. I have discovered that it is the course I want to do at university and even the career I want to pursue in later life.”
