Course Summary

A-Level Product Design is a creative and thought-provoking qualification that gives you the practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and confidence to succeed. You will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental, and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put your learning in to practice by producing prototypes of their choice. You will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers.

Course Details

A-level Design and Technology: Product Design requires students to engage in both practical and theoretical study. The course requires students to cover design and technology skills and knowledge.This creative and thought-provoking qualification gives students the practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and confidence to succeed in several careers. Especially those in the creative industries. They will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental, and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put their learning in to practice by producing prototypes of their choice. Students will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers.

There are two parts to A-Level Product Design. You will study:

  • Technical principles (external written exam)
  • Design and making principles (internally assessed).

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs Level 9-4, Level 5 in the relevant subject area.

If you are doing GCSE Design and Technology, you need to get a Grade 5+.

If you are not doing GCSE Design and Technology, then you need to get a Grade 5+ in English Language and Maths.
