Product Design
A Level
This A level draws on authentic design practice and contemporary technologies but students are free to explore design possibilities that excite and engage them. The course gives a strong foundation for further study and develops thinking and design skills that will support them in any future direction.
Why product design?
Students develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills, develop and make prototypes and products that solve real world problems, considering the needs, wants, aspirations and values of others. They identify market needs and opportunities for new products and initiate and develop design solutions. Students will make and test prototypes and products while learning about how products can be developed through the stages of designing, prototyping, realisation and commercial manufacture.
What’s expected?
We expect students to be open to taking design risks, showing innovation and enterprise whilst considering their role as responsible designers and citizens. We want them to develop intellectual curiosity about the design and manufacture of products and systems and to work with others to develop and refine their ideas, responding to feedback from users, peers and expert practitioners. We want our students to be able to develop and use key design and technology terminology to communicate effectively in future education and employment.
Entry requirements
It would be helpful if you have studied Design and Technology at GCSE attaining a grade 5 or above.
Your next steps...
The course is suitable for students wishing to develop their designing and creative skills and those who may wish to progress further in the fields of engineering, graphic design ,architecture and product design.
