Course Details
The Level 3 Extended Diploma has been designed to provide the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to degree-level study in art and design, or into employment.
It provides an opportunity for those who have an interest in the visual arts to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from further to higher education.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Objective
The objectives of these qualifications are to enable students to:
1 Develop a critical and contextual awareness of different perspectives and approaches within art, design or related subjects of study or work.
2 Research, analyse and evaluate relevant information and ideas in order to develop creative solutions.
3 Understand, adapt and use appropriate practical skills.
4 Solve complex problems through the application of art, design or related practical, theoretical and technical understanding.
5 Critically review the effectiveness and appropriateness of methods, actions and results.
6 Use evaluative and reflective skills to take responsibility for their own learning, development and decision making.
7 Take responsibility for the research, planning, time and actions required to access progression opportunities.
8 Present themselves and their work.
Assessment
The course is assessed through a series of projects that are designed to broaden student’s skills, experience and expertise. The projects are multi-disciplinary and require students to work collaboratively and pro-actively with fellow students as well as external clients and stakeholders. A final end-point assessment (commonly referred to as the Final Major Project) decides the student’s overall grade for the two years.
Entry requirements
Minimum 4 GCSEs at grade 9-4 including English, maths, Art & Design, or an art-related subject. Or a relevant Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above including GCSE English and maths at grade 9-4.
Candidates are asked to provide a portfolio of varied work indicating a strong interest in visual studies. Successful completion of a pre-interview task is also required, which will be discussed at an informal interview. Students will also be asked to provide an academic reference.
