Course Summary

Photography is a subject for creative thinkers who enjoy the challenge of communicating their ideas through photography.

Course Details

A Level Photography provides students with opportunities to develop personal responses to ideas, observations, experiences, environments and cultures in practical, critical and contextual forms. This two-unit specification, a coursework portfolio and exam, requires students to develop their ability to show a range of skills. These include: independence of mind in developing their own ideas; an interest and enthusiasm for art and design; the experience of working with a range of media; including traditional and new media and technologies; an awareness of different roles, functions, audiences and consumers of art and design practice.

You will study a wide range of topics over the two years including but not limited to:
· Portraiture
· Landscapes. Working in but not limited to: Urban, coastal and rural environments.
· Photographic installations.
· Digital Manipulation
· Light Drawings.
· Multimedia
· Moving image
· Traditional Black and White Photography
· Fashion photography
· Still life photography

There will be a range of lesson styles and activities, including practical hands-on workshops where new techniques and processes are taught, collaborative and individual work are encouraged to give a taster for university and work-place life. Tutorials will be given in a university style to ensure enough progress is met on a weekly basis.

Pupils will be required to create a portfolio of work using sketchbooks and digital software. A starter pack is purchased from school and then all materials are provided by the school. Trips are organised so that pupils can see

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Photography is 60% coursework and 40% exam and it all assessed through your portfolio. The four components that you are assessed on include:

  • Recording information - taking high-quality photos
  • Developing ideas by responding to photographers work
  • Editing your ideas and practical work
  • Final pieces of work.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs Level 9-4, Level 5 in relevant subject area.
