Course Summary

This Apprenticeship Standard is designed for Machinists who are involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work, machining components from specialist materials using conventional and/or CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multi- axis CNC machine tools centres. They will be expected to be able set up, operate and adjust/edit equipment settings as applicable to the machine tool being used. When using CNC equipment they will be expected to be able to produce, prove and/or edit programmes. During and on completion of the machining operations they will be expected to measure and check the components being produced and make adjustments to the equipment/programme to ensure components meet the required specification.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Apprentices will attend college on day-release for 1 or 2 days a week during term time for 3 years. During this time, they will be visited in the workplace every 8 to 10 weeks where they will be guided through the work-based side of their programme. The final 6 months are focussed on preparing the apprentice for End-Point Assessment which will determine the final outcome of the Apprenticeship. This includes theory and practical tests.

Entry requirements

Suitable employment. GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics and 1 other subject or the equivalent.
Remember, an apprenticeship is a job so the hiring employer may have additional criteria that will have to be met alongside CRC’s entry criteria.

Your next steps...

The successful completion of this course could lead to a supervisory role in engineering with a Level 4 Apprenticeship, an HNC/HND or a Degree in Engineering.

To start an apprenticeship, you will need to secure a suitable apprenticeship job with an employer:

Find the apprenticeship programme that you are interested in and express an interest in it by completing an application on MyChoice@16 and you will be signed up to our job alerts to keep you up-to-date with all the latest apprenticeship job vacancies.

You can also search the latest apprenticeship vacancies on the listing on our website and apply for a job.

Once you have secured an apprenticeship job with an employer you will then be enrolled on the programme with the College.

It is recommended that you also apply for a full-time course as a back up just in case you are not able to source a suitable job in time for September.
