History A level

We ask for a minimum GCSE score of 5 grades at grade 4 or above in five different subjects including English Language and Mathematics. We accept equivalent Level 2 qualifications such as BTEC and OCR Nationals but will only count them as 1 grade.

In addition most subjects require at least a grade 5 at GCSE in order to take them at Level 3. Maths and Science subjects require a grade 6.

Is this course for me?

If you have a passion for History and enjoyed studying the subject or want to have an understanding of how the world has been shaped then this is the subject for you. History at A-Level is exciting and challenging, as you will enjoy debating with each other and with your teachers about a variety of historical topics, analysing information to make judgements and learning about key characters and events from the past that still resonate today.

What will I learn?

The new A-level syllabus gives the KES History students a great opportunity to study the nature of power and control across four contrasting countries and two very different periods. You will study:

• England, 1509-1603: authority, nation and religion (30% exam based)

• The Dutch Revolt, c1563-1609 (20% exam based)

• Civil Rights and Race Relations in the USA, 1850-2009 (30% exam based)

• The Holocaust (20% coursework)

You need to be good at arguing! To do well at A-Level you need to be able to argue your points and have an opinion about the various historical issues. Remember there is no ‘correct’ argument in your essays, as long as you can support and explain your points you’ll earn your marks.

A level History helps you to think clearly, analyse problems and master a wide range of relevant material in order to present a concise, clear conclusion based on evidence.

We anticipate that most students would have a Grade 5 in GCSE History

With a History qualification you can embark on a career in Journalism, Heritage, Media, Teaching, Research, and Law. History is incredibly highly regarded in the ‘real world’ based on its difficulty and transferrable skills. You will be able argue, analyse, interpret, debate, persuade and communicate (orally and in writing). History is in the top 3 of all universities for student choices.
