Course Details

Health and Social Care is a growth industry – almost 1.5 million people work in the sector; there will be half a million more jobs by 2030. This quali?cation therefore isn’t just about teaching learners how to care for babies or the elderly and the ill. Instead, it will provide them with the skills, knowledge and understanding that will allow them to progress to Higher Education or an apprenticeship for a health and social care-related programme such as mental health, paramedic, nursing or social work.

The Course:

OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Health and Social Care 05315. This is the equivalent to two A Levels in terms of size and complements other A Levels, particularly Sociology and Psychology.

The Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Health and Social Care is a vocational quali?cation which is designed with the workplace in mind and provides a high-quality alternative to A-Levels. Cambridge Technicals provide a strong base for progression to university, apprenticeships or work and are recognised for UCAS tariff points. Learners will learn by applying their skills, knowledge and understanding to tasks or activities that are relevant to what happens in health, social care and childcare workplaces and how to be proactive in promoting healthy lifestyles and supporting individuals within the sector. Example units studied include;

  • Sexual health and reproduction
  • Equality, diversity and rights
  • Infection control
  • Anatomy and physiology, etc.

Having an appreciation of what happens in the workplace will also help to prepare learners for continuing their education in this sector. Learners will take 12 or 13 units, made up of mandatory and optional units.

Opportunities to put theory into practice

The course is designed to be vocational so that students can apply their knowledge to the real world. For example,

  • Visiting speakers
  • Independent research
  • Work experience
  • University seminars, e.g. careers-focused trip to University of Suffolk
  • Visits to health and social care settings, e.g. hospitals, GP surgeries, children’s nurseries
  • Case studies, etc.

Entry requirements
