Course Summary
The Level 1 Functional Skills Maths course is designed to develop your mathematical ability along with helping you gain confidence in your mathematical work. It will help with numeracy skills required in other subjects and prepare you for being able to take GCSE Maths in the following academic year.
It gives you the opportunity to study Maths in a more contextual way - relating mathematical concepts to real-life situations and the course provides a foundation for progression to employment or further education as well as helping you gain skills for everyday life.
Course Details
Using numbers and the number system - whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages;
Using common measures, shape and space;
Handling information and data.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
One externally assessed assessment comprising of two sections – a non-calculator section and a calculator section.
Section A (non-calculator) 25 mins (25% of the qualification)
Section B (calculator) 1 hr 30 mins (75% of the qualification)
Entry requirements
Grade 1 or 2 in GCSE Maths
(If you have a grade 3 you are required by the government to take the GCSE Maths resit course rather than a Functional Skills course)
Your next steps...
Passing Level 1 Functional Skills Maths will enable you to progress onto GCSE Mathematics the following year. It is a creditable qualification to show mathematical competency in real-life situations.
