Course Summary

Food Science and Nutrition is a subject for people who enjoy cooking and have a passion for learning about food. You will gain knowledge about Food Science and Nutrition and the relationship between food and the human body. There is a strong emphasis on practical work, making this an ideal choice for students who prefer learning through doing.

Course Details

This is an exciting new course which will allow students to gain a wealth of knowledge about the Food and Nutrition industry. You will have the opportunity to learn about the relationship between the human body and food, as well as developing practical skills linked to experimental work and the cooking and preparation of food. Students will gain an understanding of food science and nutrition and its relevance to a wide range of industries and job roles. Care providers and nutritionists in hospitals use this knowledge, as do sports coaches and fitness instructors. Hotels and restaurants, food manufacturers and government agencies also use this understanding to develop menus, food products and policies that support healthy eating initiatives. There are many employment opportunities within this field and this course is an ideal choice for students who prefer to learn in an applied way as there is a strong emphasis on practical work. The assessment creates flexible choices for students to specialize in individual areas of interest, assessed through a combination of written exam projects and case studies for different learning styles.

You can achieve a Certificate or Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition, depending on the number of units studied:

Unit 1: Planning to meet nutritional needs (mandatory)

Unit 2: Ensuring food is safe to eat (mandatory)

Unit 3: Experimenting to solve food production problems

Unit 4: Current issues in consumer food choice.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs Level 9-4, Level 5 in the relevant subject area.

If you are doing Level 2 in Hospitality and Catering then you need to get a Level 2 Pass. If you are doing GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition then you need to get a Grade 5+
