Course Summary
The EPQ differs from other subjects as the student chooses their own subject of study and, with help and guidance, produces a 5000 word written report accompanied by a short presentation, OR an artefact accompanied by a 1000 word minimum written report. A logbook is also completed throughout the project detailing the students’ journey through the process. The topic can be related to A level/BTEC studies or an area of personal interest.
Course Details
The EPQ is an independent project and the student is responsible for setting their own timescales, booking and attending appointments with an allocated supervisor, and conducting their own research.
Taught sessions are delivered in which the students will learn:
● How to choose an appropriate subject
● How to compose an evaluative question or title for their project
● Research skills - primary and secondary
● The importance of ethical considerations
● Academic writing
● Harvard referencing
● Report writing
● Independent learning
● Project management
● Analytical and evaluation skills
● Decision making
● Time management
● Organisation
Entry requirements
The EPQ is studied in addition to your other Level 3 subjects and commences in the spring term of Year 12, concluding in the spring term of Year 13.
Your next steps...
University courses: universities recognise the importance of the EPQ and the development of skills that are transferable to higher education studies. Many universities will offer a lower entry requirement if the student achieves well in the EPQ. For example: the course may require ABB but this could be lowered to ABC if the student achieves an A in the EPQ. Employment and Apprenticeships: employers will also recognise the benefits of the EPQ as it evidences the prospective employee’s ability to work independently and learn new skills. Also, that they have chosen to study an extra subject and take on extra work to benefit their future prospects.
