Course Summary
Core Maths is a practical Level 3 qualification designed for students who achieved at least a Grade 5 at GCSE Mathematics but are not studying A-Level mathematics. The course builds confidence in applying mathematics to real-life situations such as finance, statistics, estimation, probability and interpreting data. Students develop problem-solving and analytical skills using authentic contexts including Business, Science, Economics, Geography, Psychology and everyday decision-making. The emphasis is on applying mathematical thinking rather than learning abstract algebraic techniques.
Core Maths works especially well alongside subjects such as:
◊ Psychology.
◊ Biology.
◊ Chemistry.
◊ Physics.
◊ Geography.
◊ Economics.
◊ Business Studies.
◊ Sociology.
◊ Computer Science.

paper 1: Compulsory paper.
Paper 2: One optional application paper chosen by the College.
What to Expect in Each Paper?
Paper 1 - Analysis of Data and Maths for Personal Finance.
This paper focuses on applying mathematics in realistic contexts.
Topics include:
Students are expected to use mathematical reasoning to solve contextual problems and communicate conclusions clearly.
Paper 2 – Optional Application Paper.
Wymondham College will choose one of the following options:
◊ Statistical Techniques.
◊ Critical Path and Risk Analysis.
◊ Graphical Techniques.
This paper develops students’ ability to apply mathematics to extended real-world problems and scenarios. Students are given preliminary material before the examination to help prepare for the context of the paper
How will it be delivered and assessed?
There is no coursework component.
Assessment is entirely through external examinations at the end of the course.
Entry requirements
Minimum of a Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.
