Application Instructions

Student entry into our Sixth Form requires 5 grade 4 GCSE's or above including English and Maths.

If you studied the applied subject at GCSE we are asking for a grade 5 in that subject (Grade 6 in Maths and Sciences)

Course Summary

Digital & Computing offers two possible Level 3 pathways for students interested in computing, technology and the rapidly developing digital sector: A-Level Computer Science and the new V-Level in Digital Systems & Data.

These qualifications offer different approaches to studying computing. A-Level Computer Science is an academic pathway with a strong focus on computational thinking, programming, algorithms and computer science theory. The V-Level in Digital Systems & Data is an applied pathway, combining technical knowledge with practical skills in areas such as data, digital systems, cybersecurity and emerging technologies.

Students applying for Digital & Computing should be aware that we expect to run one of these two qualifications. The final pathway offered will be confirmed once the profile, interests and progression needs of the incoming student cohort are known. We will discuss both pathways with applicants so that students understand the options available before enrolment.

Whichever pathway is offered, students will develop valuable digital, analytical and problem-solving skills that prepare them for further study, apprenticeships and careers within the technology sector.

If you are interested in Digital & Computing but are unsure which pathway may be most suitable for you, or would like further information about the differences between A-Level Computer Science and the V-Level in Digital Systems & Data, please speak to Mr Hubbard, Head of Computing (Email: jhubbard@sca-edu). We are happy to discuss the two qualifications, their content and assessment, and how each pathway may support your future plans.

Course Details

A-Level Computer Science explores the theoretical principles that underpin modern computing alongside practical programming and problem-solving. Students study areas including:

Processors, computer architecture, memory and Storage

Software and software development

Networks and Data exchange

Data types, data structures and Boolean algebra

Algorithms and computational thinking

Programming and problem-solving

Databases

Web technologies

Legal, moral, cultural and ethical issues surrounding technology

An independent programming project in which students analyse a problem and design, develop, test and evaluate their own solution

The course requires students to think logically, work with abstract concepts and become confident programmers

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Both pathways combine teacher-led learning with practical activities, independent study and opportunities to apply knowledge to realistic computing problems.

A-Level Computer Science

OCR A-Level Computer Science is assessed through:

Computer Systems - 2 hour 30 minute written examination, worth 40%

Algorithms and Programming - 2 hour 30 minute written examination, worth 40%

Programming Project - an independently developed programming solution and accompanying documentation, worth 20%

Students therefore need to be comfortable with both extended theoretical study and programming.

Entry requirements

Student entry into our Sixth Form requires 5 grade 4 GCSE's or above including English and Maths.

For A-Level Computer Science, students should normally have achieved at least a Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics. GCSE Computer Science is useful but is not essential; students without GCSE Computer Science should be prepared to develop their programming skills quickly.

As the final qualification offered will depend on the incoming cohort, individual suitability and entry requirements will be discussed with students before enrolment.

Your next steps...

Digital and computing skills are in demand across a wide range of industries, and both pathways can support progression into higher education, apprenticeships and employment.

A-Level Computer Science provides particularly strong preparation for university courses such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and related disciplines. Its emphasis on algorithms, programming and computational thinking also complements subjects such as Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Engineering.

V-Level Digital Systems & Data provides preparation for progression into technical and applied digital routes, including higher and degree apprenticeships, employment and further study in areas such as Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Digital Technology, IT, Cloud Computing and Information Systems.

Potential careers across the wider digital sector include software development, cybersecurity, data analysis, network and cloud engineering, artificial intelligence, database development, systems analysis and many other technology-focused roles.
