Course Summary
This two-year, vocational Level 3 qualification is the equivalent size of three A Levels. It combines practical performance training with the knowledge and business understanding needed to work in the performing arts industry, preparing students for higher education, apprenticeships or direct entry into the sector.
Course Details
Students complete a range of mandatory core units alongside pathway-specific units in either Acting or Music, plus optional specialist units. All students undertake a mix of internally assessed, centre-marked project work and externally examined units, reflecting real industry practice.
• Core units common to all pathways: Preparing to work in the performing arts sector; Understanding the business of performing arts; Influential performance practitioners/practice; Proposal for a commissioning brief; Final Major Project (original performance).
• Acting pathway units: acting skills and technique, rehearsal process, ensemble performance, developing a role from text, contemporary and classical performance styles.
• Music pathway units: solo and ensemble music performance, music composition and arrangement, music technology and production, music business and the recording industry.
• Optional units allow further specialism, e.g. choreography, stage/production management, musical theatre, or session musicianship.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The majority of units are internally assessed through practical performance, portfolios and written assignments based on vocational scenarios, moderated by OCR. A small number of units are externally assessed (examined or set task), reflecting the qualification's rigour alongside its practical focus.
Entry requirements
Five GCSEs at grade 4+ including English, an audition, interview or workshop may form part of the selection process.
