Course Summary

The course is designed for students who wish to explore and extend their experience in working in 2D and 3D art & design.

Course Details

In the first year students will explore and create various art & design works in a range of disciplines. These include:

  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Print making
  • Textiles
  • Sculpture
  • 3D
  • Collage
  • Photography
  • Computer generated imagery

Students will be able to try out different materials and processes and explore the many ways artists and designers communicate visual ideas.

In the second year, you have the opportunity to extend skills and knowledge with a more specialist focus, leading towards a final major project. The emphasis will be on development, ideas and the creation of exciting and ambitious artwork in order to build an extensive and exciting portfolio. The course includes observation drawing, contextual studies, short projects, group project work and specialist workshops.

You will be required to continue with projects independently and it is expected that there will be 10-12 hours independent study undertaken each week. This will be a combination of supervised study hours at College and work at home.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The work on the course is project/assignment based and assessment is continuous throughout the course. The units in the first two terms are assessed at Pass grade only. The final unit is awarded a grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction. This unit is achieved through a personal project proposal, ensuing body of work and exhibition and decides the overall grade for the qualification.

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 5 or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or higher, including English, Maths and a relevant creative based subject

Or:

  • A Merit grade in a relevant Level 2 diploma and
either English or Maths at Grade 4 or higher

You will be invited to an informal interview to help ensure the course is right for you. You will need to bring a portfolio of your creative work for the course team to look at. This is to showcase your creative flair, visual research, ideas and technical skills and can consist of a range of work from different medias such as drawing, painting, photography or 3D design. We really like to see sketchbooks however work can also be presented through photographs.
