Applied Science
Extended Certificate Level 3
This course will develop your knowledge and understanding of all aspects of science through the study of biology, chemistry and physics. We expect you to develop practical and analytical skills and to hone your ability to use ICT and complex calculations to prove or disprove experimental data. You will also explore how science is used in industries throughout the UK.
Why Applied Science?
Applied Science combines well with many subjects: particularly Health & Social care, or as a stand-alone science qualification that covers elements of all three sciences studied at GCSE. It is often a requirement if you want to study nursing or childcare and is also very important for many careers in different scientific industries. Increasingly, Applied Science is recognised as a new and exciting way to experience science in action in industry today.
What’s expected?
We expect you to be enthusiastic about science in all its forms and to participate fully in practical investigations. In lessons, you will carry out numerous experiments, analysing techniques and evaluating what you have discovered. In year 12, you will complete a portfolio of work on applied experimental techniques. This is a good opportunity for you to demonstrate independent study skills. You will also prepare, with the support of your teachers, for two external examinations that contribute up to 67% of your mark. The exams cover key aspects of biology, chemistry and physics, as well as assessing your understanding and knowledge of experimental techniques. In year 13, there is further portfolio work on different aspects of scientific practice and an external examination.
Entry requirements
Candidates should have studied Science at GCSE level and achieved at least level 4 or 5.
Your next steps...
This course is designed to give a broad introduction to employment within the scientific sector and further training. Candidates who achieve these qualifications will also be suitably prepared to enter a variety of HND or Degree Level Courses in science-related subjects.
