Spanish (A Level)

For All courses except Beauty - choose three first choice subjects from four different option blocks. You will be asked just before submitting your application to choose three second choice subjects. They must be from the same Option Blocks as you first choices. For instance, if your first three choices are from Blocks A,B and D your second choice courses must also be from Blocks A, B and D

For Beauty just choose this subject by itself.

In order to follow an academic Level 3 programme of study you must achieve five or more GCSE (or equivalent) Grade 5 or above, including English Language or Literature and Mathematics.

In order to follow a vocational or mixed Level 3 programme of study, it is desirable that you achieve five or more GCSE (or equivalent) Grade 5 or above, including English Language or Literature and Mathematics. Those students without a 4 in English or mathematics, will take a level 2 qualification in these as part of their studies.

In addition you must achieve the GCSE grades specified for individual subjects which is outlined under each of the course descriptions

The A level in Modern Foreign Languages offers students the chance to further extend their knowledge of both the language and culture studied. Unlike GGSE, it includes elements of literature and film which deepen the student’s understanding of the country and its media.

• Listening reading and translation. Pupils will sit the exam which will test them on their listening skills, their ability to infer from authentic texts and translate from the foreign language in to English.
• Writing This paper includes a translation from English in to the foreign language. Alongside this, it also includes two questions which require a written response to the chosen film and novel.
• Speaking Pupils will produce a presentation on a chosen topic of research. Following this, there is a discussion on areas linked to the chosen theme. This theme can be one chosen from personal interest or from the study of the culture and country.

Pupils will need to be able to study independently and practice the language in their own time in order to succeed.

Students successfully passing A level MFL will be able to continue studying further at university. Many careers are looking for people with language skills, particularly following the sharp drop in language uptake in the UK. Careers can include tourism, teaching, interpreting and translation as well areas such as engineering and travel.
