Course Details

The Spear Programme is one of the UK’s most effective youth employment programmes.

1 in 8 young people in the UK aren’t earning or learning. Spear exists to help young people overcome the barriers they’re facing so they can thrive in work and life

It starts with mindset. Over four-to-six weeks, we coach young people aged 16-24 to recognise their strengths and see what’s possible, and they gain the practical skills they need to build a career and thrive.

We’ll then stay with them for up to a year as they step into work, training or education – with confidence, purpose and clear direction. It’s no wonder that businesses tell us their Spear hires are some of their best employees.

What happens on the Spear Programme?

You’ll be in a group of 10-15 young people who aren’t earning or learning.

On weekday afternoons for 4-6 weeks, our friendly coaches will lead the group through topics like presenting, interview practice and CV writing. You may visit a company, and you’ll get access to our network of employer partners.

But much more than all this, the coaches will work with you to boost your confidence and transform your belief in what you can do.

What’s different about Spear?

Spear treats you like an adult – we’re coaches, not teachers. We work with you to help you achieve your career goals.

Most of our trainees have at least one challenge, such as low qualifications, struggles with their mental health, or a criminal record. We’ve supported thousands of young people with these challenges to get a job and thrive. We believe anyone can overcome barriers to work. We believe in your potential.

Your next steps...

What kinds of jobs do people get after Spear?

Spear grads go into a wide variety of jobs, from customer service, retail, business admin, health and construction to a range of apprenticeships, including in hospitality and financial services.

Others go back to college or on to university. Once you’ve got a job, our coaches keep in touch with you for a year to help you think about the next steps in your career.

The programme is free and proven to work – it has gold-standard evidence from the government’s Data Lab. Over 70% of those who complete Spear get into work or education and are still there a year later.

Spear has rolling start dates throughout the year, and across the country. The next programme in Norwich begins on 17th November
