Course Summary

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Performing Arts: Musical Theatre combines practical performance work, theory, and evaluation to explore theatre and the wider industry. You will investigate the work of theatre and performance practioners, develop skills and techniques through practical workshops and build musical theatre skills for live performances. You will also work collaboratively to create and stage live performances.

Course Details

The course contains four units. The first requires learners to investigate the work of performing arts practitioners and develop critical analysis skills and contextual understanding of how practitioners communicate themes in their work. The second unit explores technical performance skills with a focus on developing skills and techniques in at least two performance styles. The third unit combines

acting, singing and dance. It gives learners the opportunity to develop an understanding of the key features of musical theatre through research and practical activities. The final unit draws on individual practical performance skills and demonstrates an understanding of the

methods and techniques for creating performance in order to contribute to the making and realisation of new performance material. Learners will work in small groups to create an original performance piece in response to a stimulus.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Students are assessed primarily through practical assignments, workshop performances, class projects, rehearsals, portfolios, and written evaluations or logs (70%). There is a portion of the course externally assessed through as a set task in a group performance workshop brief provided and marked directly by Pearson (30%).
